In today’s digital age, where information is literally littered. Ignorance is no longer bliss, It’s a choice! A very conscious choice of which we may or may not be aware of. But dictates our life in numerous ways!
But where an average human being has over 60,000 thoughts a day, it’s quite easy to get drifted away. With this finding, your true purpose in life can be a daunting task! It’s tougher than searching for a needle in a haystack.

I totally get it! Been there! Done that!
But the question here is what exactly is your purpose in life?
Being a Millennial, I have struggled with this thought several times! Up till this very day, I still wonder sometimes! And the thought of me being completely wrong about it makes me lose my calm!
Ever since I adopted a spiritual way of living and my life’s journey so far I have realised that the ultimate purpose of your life is Joy! As cliche, as it sounds that, is the truth! And doing what gives you joy is your true purpose in life!

Don’t believe me?

Just look around! All great people that are immensely successful in whichever field, amassed such excellence because they enjoyed the thing that they were doing. Work seemed more like play to these people. They also had their fair share of ups and downs but dedication to their purpose never flickered. It only got stronger and stronger.

Do you know why?

For the very reason that they enjoyed doing what they were doing! It gave them immense joy. A sense of fulfilment, satisfaction.
Our purpose is always aligned to the thing that gives us joy! Why on Earth do you think we have come if not to enjoy our lives!
Every soul that is born on this planet has a calling, a purpose that is sacred to her. It is like our fingerprint totally unique!
Unlike animals, we humans are the superior species. We have a logical and rational mind. And are free to exercise our free will.
Do you just subscribe to the whole idea of eat, sleep, work, repeat?
If not, Give yourself a pat on the back! It is great, you have finally started questioning things about your life.
Like everyone I too was clueless! I had a hard time figuring out things in regards to my “Purpose” or “Calling” so to say! It seemed like a quarter-life crisis! Though I’m still too young for it!
But you my friend, you need not worry! We all are in the same boat!
The destination may be different but oftentimes the journey is the same.
Here are some things for you to figure that out!
Some hints and clues to ponder and think over!
  • What did you enjoy doing as a kid?

As a kid, I always had this urge to creatively express myself. I would often take part in elocutions, debates, essay writing competitions. And thoroughly enjoyed it. I enjoyed the complete process of it. There were also some minute tasks in regards to my interests that I did not enjoy as often but that never pulled me back in pursuing my passions.
And because I loved doing what I was doing I won many competitions. It seemed like a child’s play. Though I was a child back then! pun intended! But till this very day, my passions have not changed. The whispers of my calling get louder and louder!
Your calling may or may not be the exact thing that you enjoyed as a child. But oftentimes, it could also be the core element of that very thing. Which may further be directly or indirectly linked to your passion.
Eg. As a kid, if you liked being the class monitor, which would excite you a lot and you often were a teacher’s pet. Now it could somehow mean that your purpose has something to do with displaying “Leadership” qualities and serving people.
  • What is something that you are naturally gravitated towards?

What action that you perform seems almost effortless? Something that you lose track of time and never look at how long it’s been since you started doing it? It feels as if time doesn’t exist! What is something that you are pulled towards no matter how hard you try to resist? You’re so inspired to do that, it gives you a sense of fulfilment. Something that may or may not give you monetary gains. But it gives you immense joy and satisfaction! It is inspired action, you just go with the flow doing it! You are ready to be flexible and adjust your priorities many times for the same.
  • What is it that you enjoyed doing as a hobby?

Think about your hobbies? What is it that you love doing?
Is it Writing? Painting? Art? Poetry? Baking? Teaching? Singing? Dancing? Reading? Sports?
What was the first thing that came to your mind when you read this? What was that activity you performed last weekend or are planning to do the coming weekend? Something that your heart yearns for. Even the thought of it makes you excited and motivated no matter what. Your hobby may most likely present you with a clue about what it is that you’re so badly wanting to do but haven’t yet figured out!
  • Ask Someone!

Many times the things that are so hard for us to understand and think through our loved ones can easily point to it. Ask your near and dear ones preferably the ones you trust and you know would be totally honest with you about the ‘things or skills” you overlook! What is it that people admire you for? Something that you are complimented for even by strangers! And that which you ignore thinking that “they are just being kind”! The fact that you’re being praised for the same old things several times is not a stroke of luck or just an act of random kindness!
Lastly, As the journey of life progresses you may develop various interests and passions. It will keep on evolving as you move further in life. You may also discover you have multiple purposes (s) that are interlinked. And as you keep moving, one day you’ll look back and be able to connect the dots! Which made no sense earlier but is a huge “AHA” moment!

If the path before you is clear, you’re probably on someone else’s

– Carl Jung

Also, your ‘‘Calling’ or ‘‘Purpose’’ need not be something grand or extravagant. It should be something that matters to you. Something that gives your life meaning. Because after all, everything is subjective. What’s nothing for you may be a big deal for someone else.
Your purpose is a gift that you’ve come here to give to the World.
Once you do figure out what it is it is that you want to “DO” in life. Pat yourself on the back! You’ve done a great job! Next, don’t panic if you don’t have all the answers. You may not have clarity about the entire thing at first. But be rest assured that you’re on the right track and this is quite normal. Ask Steve Jobs about it! He had no idea either! What he did know is that he had a dream and a burning desire to make those dreams a reality! And rest is history!
Life would be much easier if there would be a “How to know your Life Purpose” manual! But unfortunately, there isn’t! But what we do have is our Inner Compass. Our Heart, Instinct, Intuition, Gut feeling. All serve a great purpose in aligning us to our “Purpose” in life!
In following them lies life’s greatest mystery and opens a path towards liberation…
